Good god. I just watched Four Weddings and a Funeral. It was awful. I don't know how on earth it managed to win four british academy awards and an oscar for best picture. I mean, ok acting good and all that. Hugh Grant, his brother - awesome. But the plot...
The characterization of the American girl was dreadful! I didn't see why Hugh Grant fell for her because she was nothing but an irritating, two-dimensional character that steps in every now and then and screws up his emotions. As an audience, I didn't particularly want him to marry her. And if I did it was only because I wanted him to be happy. But there was no like, 'She's nice, she's fun. He absolutely must marry her!' I mean... at least in My Best Friend's Wedding almost everyone who watched it wanted Julia Roberts to marry Dermot Mulroney. Here it was just, 'Meh. At least he's not marrying duckface.'
I think 27 Dresses had a better story line than this movie. Ok fair enough, I'm not exactly the girl who fantasizes about the big white wedding since the age of 12, but I found watching 4 weddings like that very tiring and a little dull, with a tad bit of annoyance in between whenever Hugh Grant talked to the American girl. And if there was ever a tiny bit of me that might have fantasized about getting married - well done, that movie has officially cured me of it.
