The popcorn was good, the movie was better, and even thought there were cotton hearts and candy messages of love, roses, balloons and multitudes of couples walking arm in arm around the both of them, she had to admit that all in all it was a good night.
After the movie they walked down the street to play pool, and as they strolled past the late night lovers with their now wilting flowers, she suddenly felt as if she was above it all. All this waste of time and effort in this declaration of love so that just for tonight everyone out there could feel like the perfect couple. And maybe the tiniest bit of her wanted to link her arm around his in the manner of the existing fashion, just to see what would happen.
Pool was fun. They got chalk all over each other just for the hell of it. He won almost every game.
Then they said goodbye and goodnight and went their separate ways. And as the chalky girl got into her cab and closed the door, she realized that for a moment she was happy, and so she looked out the window and smiled.
